Waiting on Wednesday: Barefoot in Lace by Roxanne St. Claire

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights eagerly anticipated upcoming releases!

I absolutely love Roxanne St. Claire's world of Barefoot Bay, which is why my WOW pick this week is Barefoot in Lace. I fell in love with Gussie in the previous Barefoot Bay Brides story, and I simply cannot wait to learn more about her.

If you're looking for a great beach read (whether you're relaxing in the sand or simply want to pretend you are), I recommend any of the books in the series. Barefoot in Lace is the second book in the Barefoot Bay Brides trilogy (after one of mt favorite books of the year, Barefoot in White), but it's the ninth story set in Barefoot Bay. As I've been reading the series as a whole out of order, I'm sure readers can jump in anywhere.

Barefoot in Lace Cover Title: Barefoot in Lace
Series: Barefoot Bay Brides, Book 2
Author: Roxanne St. Claire
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: South Street Publishing
Release Date: September 12, 2014

Book Description (from Amazon):

Kick off your shoes and fall in love again in with the Barefoot Bay Brides! Destination wedding planner Gussie McBain needs a man...specifically, a wedding photographer. Just her luck that the shutterbug she runs into is more used to snapping pictures of glamorous models in couture gowns than brides in white lace. But Gussie's never been one to let bad odds stop her from a good gamble, so she asks for a favor she never dreams superstar TJ DeMille will actually grant.

Tom DeMille lives his life exactly as he pleases--always alone. In fact, he’s got that motto tattooed in Greek on his arm. But when Tom is suddenly saddled with guardianship of his twelve-year-old niece, he'll lose more than his freedom if he can't figure out how to take care of her. Then an alluring young woman with pink hair and a sassy mouth shows up at his door, and he agrees to do the unthinkable...photograph a wedding in exchange for some help with his niece.

As they work together, Tom begins to take down the walls Gussie has erected around herself to discover a truly beautiful and tender woman he knows he could love. But will his own heartache and refusal to lay down roots prevent him from giving Gussie the family life she craves...or could she be the one woman who can finally break his vow of solitude?

Blog Tour: Evernight by Kristen Callihan

Evernight Tour

I can’t get enough of Kristen Callihan’s fantastically original Darkest London series. I’m so excited to be a part of the Evernight blog tour! Evernight is the fifth Darkest London novel, and like its predecessors, it’s engaging and unique. You can check out my review of Evernight here, but make sure to come back – I’ve got a fun Q&A with Kristen Callihan, an excerpt from Evernight, and even a giveaway from Ms. Callihan’s publisher, Forever!

Q&A with Kristen Callihan

Q: Do you have a set number of books planned for the Darkest London series, or is it open-ended?
Evernight Cover A:
There are seven books planned. SOULBOUND (book 6) is next and then FOREVERMORE finishes off the series.

Q: Do you have any favorites of the characters you've written?
A:
My favorite characters are always the ones I’m working on at present. Likely because I grow close to them as I write their story. I loved Holly and Will because they were both such strong personalities, and extreme opposites in the way they view life (at least at first.)

Q: What's one thing about being an author you wish someone had told you before you were first published?
A:
You will never have a day off. Lol. Not that it would have deterred me, because I love it. But I don’t think many beginning writers realize the level of work involved. Every writer I know is at the computer every single day. I don’t think I’ve left my laptop at home for a single vacation. But, on the other hand, if you don’t get the story out of your head, it starts to hurt, so non-stop work is also a necessity.

Q: When you’re not writing, what do you like to do?
A:
Read! On average, I read a book a day. I also like to hang out with friends and family, and travel when I can!

Excerpt from Evernight

Cool, hard, smooth, hot. The texture of his skin was unlike anything she'd ever felt. The metal made it smooth and cool and hard. Where not altered by metal, his skin was like hot satin, only silkier and tight with strength.

His flesh twitched beneath her palms as she mapped his chest. Every breath he took sounded loud and clear in her ears. And all the while, he watched her.

A quiver rippled along the backs of her thighs, up over her bottom, and crawled along her spine. Damn it, she was better than this. She was not a creature of base desires, but of logic and restraint. Her breath moved in and out, a slow, steady rhythm as she stroked him.

Neither of them spoke. The crackle of the fire in the grate, along with the occasional creak of the house settling, surrounded them. Beneath heavy lids, Thorne tracked her every move. And her touch grew unsteady. A momentary weakness he jumped upon.

"Does it feel good to you?" he drawled, low and easy. "Touching me?"

Instantly, the space between her legs clenched tight. Holly kept her touch impersonal. She could not live with the ignominy of revealing her wants to Thorne, who would treat her weakness as a bloody good joke. "It is a task. Just like any other." A bald-faced lie if ever she told one.

His nostrils flared, the platinum in his eyes shining bright. "Then why do I smell your cunny growing wet with need?"

Holly stopped, her palm flat against his pectoral muscle, as more slick heat flooded her sex. Oh, this was beyond the pale. What on earth had gotten into the blasted demon? "Being crude is not going to get a rise out of me, Mr. Thorne."

A small, cruel smile curled his lips. "Not going to deny it, are you, Miss Evernight?"

"Blather." She took up stroking an area tangled with platinum webbing with more force than necessary. "That is all you're about. Ridiculous blather. And I will not engage in such nonsense."

Holly concentrated on pulling the metal from him. Not on his scent, clean and pleasing in the space between them. Or the way his skin grew increasingly warmer.

When he spoke again, it was soft, teasing. "Do you know that when I said "cunny" your sweet scent grew stronger?"

Evernight CoverAgain she stopped. His dense muscles tightened beneath her nails. "Mr. Thorne—”

"Do you wonder," he whispered, holding her gaze with his, "if my cock is affected?" A dark brow lifted, his fangs glinting. "If it is more metal than flesh? Hard for you?"

She would not look down at the appendage in question. It was difficult enough to pretend each time that she wasn't aware of that part of him, or that she hadn't seen it grow and lengthen beneath the covers. Oh, she knew precisely how long and thick he was, and precisely how aroused. Each and every time.

His gaze upon her burned. "Do you want to see my cock, Miss Evernight? Feel it move inside of you?"

Gods, he made her feel empty, made her want to be filled up. Her hands turned to fists. "Stop it. Now, Mr. Thorne."

He rose up on his elbows, his white hair sliding over his broad and dusky shoulders, his defined abdomen tightening. "Or. What?"

Holly sat back on the stool by the table, placing her hands upon her lap so that he wouldn't see them trembling. "Why are you doing this?"

"Why not?"

She could not look away from the black and platinum starburst of his gaze, so very brilliant. So very angry and taunting. Her nails dug into her palms. "Find your amusement elsewhere."

His lean hips canted just a bit, an utterly crude gesture that held her in thrall. "I'd rather find it with you."

"I'm helping you, aren't I?" She hated how the words came out in a near-desperate pitch. But he had to stop. Agitation had her breath coming on hard and fast, pressing her now-heavy breasts against her too-tight bodice.

"Helping me," he scoffed. "Do not skew this into some act of kindness. You do so that I won't kill you."

"Is it kindness that you want?" She laughed without humor. "A funny way you go about getting it." She leaned forward in her anger. "Why are you saying these things? Truly? Why are you acting like such a... disgusting arse?"

He shot upright, his chest bumping into hers before she backed away a pace as if seared. "Because you never react during these torture sessions," he ground out. "Because I want that rise out of you. I want you to..." He bared his teeth, those evil-looking fangs growing longer. "I want to know if you feel—”

His teeth ground together, his eyes wild and silver-black.

"Feel?" she prompted as if her heart wasn't beating madly.

"Anything!" he roared. "Jesus." He ran a hand through his hair. "You touch me every day. You rub your hands all over me. And nothing! Not a flicker of emotion. As if I didn't exist." The expanse of his chest heaved with exertion, the sinewy muscles along his abdomen clenching. "And all the while I'm lying here aching, fucking dying to... You're driving me to insanity," he finished with a wild shout. "And it means exactly nothing to you—”

She grabbed hold of the back of his neck and kissed him. Just as she'd wanted to, her lips claiming his parted ones, shutting off the stream of words that flowed from him. His lips were soft and warm, and touching them set off a rush of lust that coursed along her limbs. He froze, going so tense that his neck felt like ice. For all of one second. And then he attacked. His hands plunged into her hair and gripped the sides of her head as he fell back, hauling her with him, devouring her with quick, biting kisses, punctuated by helpless groans.

Breathless and dizzy, she answered every kiss, opening her mouth when his mouth demanded it. They both shivered when their tongues slid together.

"Hell," he moaned, licking along her bottom lip. "Hell, I knew you'd taste so bloody good." He angled his head, plunging his tongue in deep as his hands held her captive. The gesture wicked and decadent. Grunting, he spun them, pressing her into the table with the strength of his body. His thigh nudged between hers, and her skirts slid up. Instantly, his hand was there, long fingers trailing along her skin. "I'm not stopping," he growled into her mouth. "So don't ask me to."

Holly tore her lips from his and grabbed a handful of silken hair. She held him fast and hard. "You'll stop if I say so."

Thorne paused, his lips brushing hers as he breathed heavily through his mouth. Hot, black eyes bore into her. "Are you asking me to stop?" He was so still and careful that she knew he would, despite his claim.

A fire raged through her veins. And the need to suckle his curved lower lip had her voice turning rough. "No."

About Kristen Callihan:

Kristen Callihan Kristen Callihan is a child of the eighties, which means she's worn neon skirts, black lace gloves, and combat boots (although never all at once) and can quote John Hughes movies with the best of them. A lifelong daydreamer, she finally realized that the characters in her head needed a proper home and thus hit the keyboard. She believes that falling in love is one of the headiest experiences a person can have, so naturally she writes romance. Her love of superheroes, action movies, and history led her to write historical paranormals. She lives in the Washington, D.C., area and, when not writing, looks after two children, one husband, and a dog - the fish can fend for themselves.

Blog Tour: What a Duke Dares by Anna Campbell

What a Duke Dares Blog Tour

I fell in love with Anna Campbell’s writing when I picked up her debut novel, Claiming the Courtesan. Nearly seven years later, I’m still a huge fan and I’m always insanely excited when Ms. Campbell has a new book out. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that Wit and Sin is part of the What a Duke Dares blog tour! What a Duke Dares is the third book in Ms. Campbell’s Sons of Sin series, and you can read my review here (spoiler alert: I loved Pen and Cam ;)).

Now on to the good stuff: Q&As with Anna Campbell and a giveaway hosted by Ms. Campbell’s publisher, Forever!

Q: WHAT A DUKE DARES is the final (that we know of) Sons of Sin story. What can readers look forward to next?
What a Duke Dares Cover A:
Hi Kimberly! Thanks for having me as your guest today to talk about my latest release, WHAT A DUKE DARES! Love the blog. Actually, there’s another story coming in the Sons of Sin series, just to make life complicated. My projected trilogy turned into a quartet. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a single marquess! I found myself increasingly fascinated by Lord Leath who plays a major part in WHAT A DUKE DARES and decided that he needed to get a happy ending (and make up his quarrel with Cam, the hero of Duke in the process). That book is called A SCOUNDREL BY MOONLIGHT and it should be out first half of next year.

Q: Before the Sons of Sin series, your books were all standalones. Do you prefer writing a series over writing a standalone novel?
A:
Actually having been so reluctant to write a series, I have to say I’m loving the experience – hence the extra stories in the Sons of Sin set. It’s wonderful to be able to revisit beloved characters and continue their stories through weddings and children and other adventures. It’s equally wonderful to introduce secondary characters in earlier books who will then take center stage later on. I’m also enjoying the enriched world building of a series – I can set the scene in one book and then bring it to fruition in the next. That’s great fun!

What a Duke Dares Cover Q: Do you have any favorites of the characters you've written?
A:
Actually I know writers always mention their current book when people ask this question, but REALLY I just love Pen and Cam from WHAT A DUKE DARES. I love that despite their romantic troubles, they never lose sight of the fact that they were friends first and I love how they try to do the right thing, even if everything just explodes into smithereens in spite of their efforts. From earlier books, I must say I have a real fondness for Antonia and Ranelaw from MIDNIGHT’S WILD PASSION.

Q: What’s one thing about being an author you wish someone had told you before you were first published?
A:
What a good question. I’m always surprised by how much time I spend NOT writing. Basically if you’re a writer, you’re running a small business with all that entails. I wish someone had told me to be prepared for that aspect of the writing career.

Q: When you’re not writing, what do you like to do?
A:
Like most writers, I’m a voracious reader. At the moment, I seem to be on a mystery kick in between all my lovely romances! I live in a very pretty part of Australia right by the sea so I really enjoy walking in my area and swimming is great when the weather’s a bit warmer than it is at the moment. I like to play the piano (very badly). And I love to travel. I’m hoping to get to England next year for a research trip. I haven’t been since 2007 and I’m definitely due for another stately home fix.

About What a Duke Dares:

Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can't stop her. Then her brother’s dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he'd finally gotten over.

The only way they'll both get back to London without their reputations in tatters is to pretend they're married during the journey. That means kissing like they mean it and even sharing a bed - until it becomes hard to tell where the game ends and true desire begins...

A reputation at risk

What woman in her right mind would say no to marrying the dashing Duke of Sedgemoor? Miss Penelope Thorne, that's who. She's known Camden Rothermere since they were children - and she also knows she'd bring nothing but scandal to his name.

Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can't stop her. Then her brother’s dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he'd finally gotten over.

Get ready for an emotional journey with What a Duke Dares! Anna Campbell’s third Sons of Sin novel is a vivid portrait of love, passion, longing, heartache, and hope.

I admit, I’ve been intrigued by Cam from the very first book in this series and I was thrilled to dig deep into his character. He’s a hero with a lot of love to give, only his parents’ behavior scarred him so badly as a child that he tries his best to wall off his emotions. My heart broke for him, because it’s clear he’s a truly good man. Yet he’s so determined not to turn into his parents, he winds up hurting Pen, even though it’s clear he wants to make her happy. And speaking the unconventional lady, Penelope is a strong, outspoken heroine who’s not afraid to buck society’s rules. She’s got a big heart and though it has long belonged to Cam, she doesn’t want to have a half-marriage where her husband doesn’t love her. I respected that, but her determination to hide her love – when mixed with Cam’s distrust of the emotion – takes a toll on both of them. Pen and Cam make numerous mistakes even as they fall deeper in love, and I could feel the frustration coming off them in waves. But every obstacle is worth it in the end, as Pen and Cam are clearly perfect for each other.

A secondary romance between Pen’s brother Harry and an heiress whose brother believes Harry to be a fortune hunter provides a fair amount of contrast to Pen and Cam’s romance. Harry and Sophie are innocent when it comes to heartbreak and both wear their hearts on their sleeves. Their plotline seems a bit disconnected from the main story at first, but when everything ties together, prepare for fireworks. There’s no putting down What a Duke Dares by the time the story reaches its climax.

What a Duke Dares is the third Sons of Sin novel, but it can be read as a standalone. That being said, the complications in the aforementioned storyline involving Harry do have their roots in events that occurred in A Rake’s Midnight Kiss. However, Ms. Campbell does provide enough information for new readers to follow along. Fans of the series will surely delight in seeing Jonas, Sidonie, Richard, and Genevieve again (I sure did). The strong bonds of friendship between Jonas, Richard, and Cam are on display in What a Duke Dares, and I couldn’t have been more entertained.

Anna Campbell is a historical romance virtuoso. The passion and emotion of Cam and Pen’s romance practically explodes off the page, entrancing the reader. I loved Pen and Cam and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Campbell has in store for readers in the next Sons of Sin story, A Scoundrel by Moonlight.

ONE KISS CAN LAST FOREVER

Becca Thorpe has uprooted her life and escaped to the beach. Now’s her chance to get away from city living, throw caution to the ocean winds, and live in the moment. Especially if the moment includes the deliciously sexy surfer she meets shortly after arriving in Lucky Harbor. Something about the dark intensity of Sam’s eyes and the thrill she gets at his touch convinces her to stay awhile.

Boatbuilder and investment genius Sam Brody is a self-made man who knows how dangerous it can be to mix business and pleasure. But he can’t resist offering Becca a job just to hear her laugh and have her near. Yet when her brother comes to town asking for help, will he tempt her back to her glamorous life in the city? Or do Sam and little Lucky Harbor have a chance to win Becca’s heart?

It’s in His Kiss is so much fun! Jill Shalvis’s tenth Lucky Harbor novel has all the sparkle, humor, and heart I’ve come to expect from this series.

Becca is a woman doing her best to start over, and her life in Lucky Harbor is a world away from the life she used to lead. She’s a smart, funny, endearing heroine who deserves the love and encouragement she finds in Lucky Harbor. And Sam…oh man, is Sexy Grumpy Surfer a hero to drool over. He’s got a severe problem with three very important words, but there’s no doubt the man has a heart of gold beneath his sometimes surly exterior. He shows his love for others in the sweetest ways – how could you not adore him? Both he and Becca have ghosts from their pasts to face, and watching them struggle and grow over the course of the story was simply wonderful. As a couple, they’re dynamite. They fit one another perfectly, yet the road to happily ever after isn’t a smooth one. I loved every up and down of their relationship and honestly, it was lovely to watch their romance unfold.

It’s in His Kiss is the tenth Lucky Harbor novel, but even though past heroes and heroines show up (it is a small town, after all), you can read Becca and Sam’s book as a standalone. However, this book does kick off the newest trilogy within the series, so be prepared to fall not only for Sam, but his two best friends, Cole and Tanner. It’d be remiss of me not to mention the banter that goes on between these three because I can’t count the number of times I smiled when the guys shared the page. But old friendships aren’t the only entertaining kind. New friends and neighbors Becca and Olivia (of the upcoming He’s So Fine) provided some laugh out loud moments of their own.

It’s in His Kiss is as addictive as the ranch popcorn Becca loves so much. It’s a bright and bubbly book, but it also has soul. It’s impossible to resist Becca and Sam, so don’t even try. Sit back and enjoy another fantastic romance from Jill Shalvis. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Once the night comes . . .

Will Thorne is living a nightmare, his sanity slowly being drained away by a force he can't control. His talents have made him the perfect assassin for hire. But as he loses his grip on reality, there is no calming him-until he finds his next target: the mysterious Holly Evernight.

Love must cast aside the shadows

Holly cannot fathom who would put a contract on her life, yet the moment she touches Will, the connection between them is elemental, undeniable-and she's the only one who can tame his bouts of madness. But other assassins are coming for Holly. Will must transform from killer to protector and find the man who wants Holly dead . . . or his only chance for redemption will be lost.

Enter the rich, seductive, dangerous world of Kristen Callihan’s supernatural Victorian-era London with Evernight. The fifth Darkest London novel is wonderfully unique and intelligent – exactly what I’ve come to expect from Ms. Callihan.

Holly is a woman ahead of her time. She’s a brilliant inventor and has a delightfully practical mind, but she’s also been living a sort of half-life since her kidnapping. Will breathes new life into Holly’s existence; he draws her out of her shell, he challenges her, and (though it sounds cheesy) he completes her as she does him. What was done to him when he and Holly were imprisoned has changed him physically and psychologically, but he’s still a vibrant, interesting demon. From the start, Holly and Will’s relationship is complex and fascinating. They need each other, but they also dislike one another – yet there’s undeniable chemistry there. I loved watching their relationship develop over the course of Evernight. At the risk of repeating myself, the two of them are simply too interesting to resist. There’re numerous obstacles – both internal and external – for them to overcome in order to simply survive, never mind be together, and Ms. Callihan kept me guessing at every turn how things would turn out.

There are a number of carefully crafted plot threads in Evernight, and Ms. Callihan masterfully weaves them together. In addition to the romance and the problem of Will’s altered state, there’s a deadly new villain in town who has their sight set on Holly for reasons I won’t disclose. If that weren’t enough, readers are treated to more of the Nex, assassins, supernatural beings whose abilities we’ve yet to explore, and the mysterious Adam, who has a problem of his own. Only an author of Ms. Callihan’s caliber could put so much in a story and still have it read as smoothly as it does. That being said, I do recommend reading the previous five Darkest London stories (Firelight, Moonglow, Winterblaze, the novella “Entwined,” and Shadowdance) before beginning Evernight. Outside the romance, much of what happens in Will and Holly’s book has its roots in events that occurred in previous books. The only downside to reading such an intricately connected series is that I wanted to start the next book, Soulbound, immediately upon finishing Evernight.

The Darkest London series is a favorite of mine for the simple fact that each book is intelligent, complex, imaginative, sensual, and romantic. Evernight continues this tradition and I simply cannot wait to see where Ms. Callihan takes readers next!

The only thing more dangerous than passion is the truth.

Former Marine and new Sheriff’s Deputy Cade Evigan is hanging onto his damaged soul—and his personal code—by a thread. His current mission? Weed out a violent motorcycle crew from a small mountain town. The problem? Katrina Killian, a woman standing firmly on the other side of the law, smack in the middle of the gang he’s there to destroy. She may get under his skin, but the sultry biker has criminal written all over her. So why can't he see her like any other convict?

For two years, Katrina has been a DEA agent hiding in plain sight amidst a pack of killers, working to put an end to the gang that has terrorized her hometown. The last thing she needs is to fall in love with a man who could blow her cover—and her heart—to pieces, but Cade’s become an addiction she can’t break. Unable to risk either of their lives with the truth, she plays both ends against the middle to keep him safe. But lies can only last so long, and Katrina’s time has just run out…

Convicted is a sexy, gritty, exciting story that’ll keep you reading late into the night. Dee Tenorio keeps the danger – and the fantastic one-liners – coming fast and hard in this engaging romantic suspense.

Katrina is one of my favorite Dee Tenorio heroines, and (given my love for Ms. Tenorio’s characters) that’s saying something. She’s an alpha female whose strength and sassiness I admired and enjoyed, but it’s her hidden vulnerabilities and big heart which really sealed the deal. Katrina goes through a hell of a lot as an undercover DEA agent and I wanted to see her succeed not only in saving the town but in finding the happiness she so deserves. Cade is every bit her equal and he too hides his pain well, but his personality is a case of still waters that run deep. He and Katrina complement one another, but there’s also plenty of friction to keep things interesting and unpredictable. The sparks that fly between the two of them from the start just get hotter and hotter as the story goes on, and I loved watching how their relationship developed.

Romance aside, the fight to save the town of Marketta from the violent, drug-running motorcycle club keeps the action in Convicted moving at a quick clip. Ms. Tenorio keeps you guessing as to how Cade and Katrina (especially Katrina) will make it out alive. I loved that I was every bit as invested in the suspense side of the story as I was the romance.

Convicted has a kick-ass hero and heroine, an insanely hot romance, sharp dialogue, and an intense plot – what’s not to love? I devoured Katrina and Cade’s book and I look forward to revisiting their story again and again.

Note: Convicted was previously published and has been revised and expanded.

Waiting on Wednesday: Waistcoats & Weaponry by Gail Carriger

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights eagerly anticipated upcoming releases!

Gail Carriger's books are always incredibly fun to read and her quirkiness shines in the Finishing School series. I finished Etiquette & Espionage and Curtsies & Conspiracies not too long ago, and I have to say this is the most entertaining series I've read this year! I can't wait to see what Sophronia and her friends get up to in Waistcoats & Weaponry. Steampunk inventions, espionage, werewolves, adventures, and more - what else could a reader want? :)

And just FYI, the audiobook editions of this series (narrated by Moira Quirk) are fantastic.

She’s protecting his body and guarding her heart...

Country music star Devin McClain understands there’s a downside to life in the public eye, but the laidback Wyoming cowboy has never imagined he’d attract crazed fans who would do anything to garner his attention. When veiled threats become real, he agrees to hire a discreet security detail. But Devin is shocked when that bodyguard is a hard-bodied woman. He’s even more stunned to be attracted to the steely-eyed stunner.

Former soldier Liberty Masterson’s return to civilian life has been fraught with challenges until she lands a job with a prestigious security firm. But when she agrees to provide personal protection during a cross-country tour, she doesn’t realize she has signed up to masquerade as the playboy star’s girlfriend. Though she’s more comfortable in combat boots than high heels, she has no choice but to appear to be the sexy groupie Devin prefers.

Living in close quarters causes the chemistry between them to ignite, and Devin realizes he wants to turn their charade of a romance into reality. Although Liberty surrenders to his every whim behind closed doors, she fears the sexy country star doesn’t see the real her; and Devin can’t help but worry when the tour ends that there might not be enough between them to build something that won’t fade away...

Get ready for a rockin’ good time with Hillbilly Rockstar! Lorelei James kicks up the heat with this sultry romance and keeps things lively thanks to her two endearing, heart-headed leads.

Liberty is a tough-as-nails veteran who’s an intriguing mix of strength and vulnerability. I loved how kick-ass she was and admired her intelligence, and the way Devin gets under her skin and into her heart made the pages of Hillbilly Rockstar fly by. And speaking of Devin…man, he’s just about every woman’s fantasy come true. Who could resist a charismatic, gorgeous musician with a good heart? Thankfully, Ms. James doesn’t make Devin perfect. His pride and resistance to admitting he needs protection leads him to be a bit of a jerk to Liberty in the beginning of the story. But not only does she call him on it, Devin does a complete one-eighty once he gets to know Liberty. The two of them have excellent chemistry and there’s a sense of realism to their relationship thanks to the ups and downs their burgeoning romance faces. It isn’t smooth sailing when a protective, traditional (for lack of a better word) guy like Devin has a female bodyguard. But every bump in the road is worth it in the end.

Though Devin and Liberty’s relationship is the center of Hillbilly Rockstar, the threats against Devin and the not-always-glamorous life of a musician on tour round out the story and were just as entertaining as the romance. In addition, we get to see Liberty and Devin’s friends and family, many of whom are past Blacktop Cowboys heroes and heroines. While Hillbilly Rockstar can be read as a standalone, fans of the series will undoubtedly love the opportunity to catch up with some of their past favorite characters. I’ve been reading this series out of order, but after finishing Hillbilly Rockstar I definitely want to catch up on the characters whose books I’ve missed.

Hillbilly Rockstar delights from beginning to end thanks to the story’s appealing leads and Ms. James’s lively prose. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Liberty and Devin and I can’t wait to read more Blacktop Cowboy books.

She’s given up on finding love…
Veterinarian Shelley Morgan has always preferred animals to humans, and not simply because she can communicate with them psychically. Unlike most people she’s known, animals have never broken her heart. But after six months in her new town, some of her favorite four-legged companions begin disappearing from the local zoo. Determined to track down the animals and their thief, the telepathic vet decides to investigate, unknowingly delving into a deadly mystery…

He’s ready to make her heart go wild…
Although his bear-like physique has been an advantage in the Tidewater Police Department, Dev Jones’s size often intimidates people. Only Shelley has seen past his massive build to the intelligent man inside, but that was years ago. So when she contacts him requesting his help to solve a series of animal kidnappings, he’s eager to reconnect with her. But the thefts escalate to murder and all the evidence points to Shelley as the killer, and Dev faces a devastating choice: forsake his career or risk losing the woman he’s grown to love…

Guarded is a stellar romantic thriller! Mary Behre’s second Tidewater novel was so engaging that I didn’t want to put it down for a moment.

Shelley is a veterinarian gifted with the ability to communicate with animals. A blessing for her, since she’s been left time and again by the people she’s loved and now only lets animals into her heart. But when Shelley learns that someone has been kidnapping animals from the local zoo, she digs into her past and contacts Dev Jones. Dev has always been in the friend zone where Shelley is concerned, but all that changes when they meet again. It’s easy to like both Shelley and Dev; they both have big hearts and are protective by nature. Their past history paves the way for a smooth friends-to-lovers transition and the ensuing romantic storyline was wonderful to watch unfold. Their biggest problem is Shelley’s unwillingness to trust others to stay, but Ms. Behre does an excellent job of showing exactly why Shelley is so wary.

The mystery of who is kidnapping wild animals and why adds intrigue to Guarded. I loved the twists and turns the story took, and I eagerly followed Shelley and Dev as they unraveled the mystery. With numerous lives on the line, multiple suspects, and a killer who’s setting Shelley up to take the fall, there’s ample danger to be found in Guarded. Shelley does have a propensity for jumping into dangerous situations without thinking things all the way through – something that detracted from the story a touch – but aside from that I pretty much loved everything about this book.

Some books are simply a joy to read, and Guarded was such a story for me. Mary Behre is definitely a romantic suspense author to watch, and I can’t wait to go back and read the first Tidewater novel, Spirited.

Thirty-nine-year-old single mom Chloe Parker thinks she was born in the wrong century. An avid Austenite who runs a failing antique letterpress business and has a lust for all things Regency England, Chloe jumps at the chance to enter a Jane Austen-inspired reality TV show with a lucrative cash prize. Chloe’s sure she’ll win, as she knows all about Jane Austen. Then she travels to England and learns that the show is, in fact, a reality DATING show set in the nineteenth century. Chloe will have to compete against other younger women to win a proposal from the handsome Mr. Wrightman, the show’s version of Mr. Darcy. It’s time for Chloe to strap on her bonnet and prepare to fight down and dirty to win her man – Austen-style.

How many of us have read a Jane Austen novel and/or watched the film adaptation and wished we could be there in her heroines’ stead? Well, as Chloe finds out, nineteenth century living ain’t all balls and witty repartee. The pratfalls of a modern woman trying to survive not just Regency England but a reality dating show on top of it brings big laughs to DEFINITELY NOT MR. DARCY. I can definitely say that author Karen Doornebos cured me of my desire to time travel to the nineteenth century…and that isn’t a bad thing. The things I learned in DEFINITELY NOT MR. DARCY concerning the day-to-day practicalities of Regency-era living were incredibly interesting. Surprisingly, the facts Ms. Doornebos weaves into her story were my favorite parts of the book. It’s not that Chloe wasn’t a great heroine, because she was definitely relatable – excepting the fact that she seemed to be a bit willfully blind at times. Rather, I simply liked the uniqueness that the reality show competition brings to DEFINITELY NOT MR. DARCY.

A dash of romance rounds out DEFINITELY NOT MR. DARCY, but Ms. Doornebos will keep readers guessing as to who Chloe’s hero is. There are two Mr. Wrightmans, but which is the right one? As one might expect from the title, neither man is Fitzwilliam Darcy. Yet there are shades of other Austen heroes – and rakes – in each man. The romance plotline of DEFINITELY NOT MR. DARCY did make me wish the book were a bit longer, as this storyline felt like it was never fully resolved. Still, Austen fans are sure to be tickled by some of what Chloe goes through in the lively DEFINITELY NOT MR. DARCY.

Elle Kennedy Reading Order

When it comes to sex, good girl Skyler Thompson always plays it safe, choosing stable and sedate over wild and thrilling. She doesn’t do one-night-stands, but one look at sinfully sexy Gage Holt and she’s willing to reconsider. He makes her want to be bad for once in her life, and she’s prepared to take what she wants.

Danger follows former MMA fighter Gage Holt like a shadow. Despite his successes as part owner of Sin, an exclusive nightclub in Boston, Gage can’t risk getting involved with a woman, especially one as sweet as Skyler. Still, he can’t resist a taste—and it’s so damn good he has to see her again.

As addicted as he is to her, Gage knows there’s no future for him and Skyler—not with his past lurking in the dark corners of an MMA cage. But Skyler’s tougher than she looks, and she’s ready to fight for her man.

One Night of Sin is fast and furious and oh-so-dirty. I devoured this first After Hours story in one sitting – it’s just that addictive.

Skyler is a good girl who’s sick of being good and wants to take a walk on the wild side. What I loved about her is that she knows what she wants and goes after it, but she never loses her sweet, caring nature. She comes into her own in One Night of Sin after hooking up with Gage, a former MMA fighter who’s as closed off as she is open. Gage is a hot as hell hero who does his best to protect those he loves, even at great cost to himself. He’s not quite sure how he falls into a relationship with Skyler, but she brings out the best in him. The two of them complement one another perfectly, and I found myself grinning more often than not while watching them fall in love. Skyler and Gage are a flat-out adorable couple, which may sound odd since they’re also sexy as sin together, but it fits. Elle Kennedy has blended sweetness and steam like a master in this story and I couldn’t be more delighted. It isn’t all smooth sailing for Gage and Skyler, but every bit of their journey is entertaining to watch unfold.

One Night of Sin is my idea of a great summer read; it’s bright, fun, heartfelt, and hot. Gage and Skyler are endearing protagonists and I hope to see more of them in future After Hours tales. And speaking of future stories, the bits and pieces we’re teased with concerning Gage and Skyler’s friends have me incredibly intrigued. So much so that I’m already on the edge of my seat, waiting to return to Ms. Kennedy’s world of Sin!
