On the ship heading for New York Viola comes face-to-face with a man who cares nothing for titles, riches, or style, but seeks substance instead. Nathaniel Shaw makes Viola question everything she is striving to become. Unlike the assorted aristocratic men Viola knows, the handsome, adventurous surgeon is interested in her brains and spirit. A Lady’s Guide to Skirting Scandal is part of Ms. Bowen’s Lords of Worth series, but not having read any of the full-length novels, I can safely say that Viola and Nate’s story can be read as a standalone. By the end of A Lady’s Guide to Skirting Scandal I found myself to be thoroughly charmed by Viola and Nate, and I’m looking forward to reading more of Ms. Bowen’s work.
