Leopold Bailey was born a saddler’s son, but his intelligence, determination and ruthlessness have made him the Demon of the Exchange. But the lords, who are impressed by his business sense, still shun Leo for his “common” blood. So Leo does the most logical thing and marries the daughter of an impoverished baron. But quiet, ladylike Anne Hartfield isn’t a woman whom Leo can simply marry and forget. She makes him yearn for more than money or power – she makes him want to win her love. There’s just one problem...

Leo and his fellow Hellraisers have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for power. Leo doesn’t want to give up his power to see the future, not when he can use the magic to ruin those who would look down on him and not when he can use his wealth to give Anne everything she deserves. Leo’s determined to keep his pact with the devil a secret from his wife, but there are others who seek to help the Hellraisers, and they won’t let Anne stay in the dark for long. It’s only a matter of time before Leo will have to choose between unimaginable power and the bride who has stolen his heart.

The stakes that author Zoë Archer set in her first HELLRAISERS book, DEVIL’S KISS, are raised in DEMON’S BRIDE. The effect of the Hellraisers’ pact with the devil is spreading across London, which means DEMON’S BRIDE is packed with adrenaline-filled scenes.

At the heart of the story, however, are Leo and Anne. Of all the Hellraisers’ bargains, Leo’s is the one that I understand the most. He’s brilliant and hard working, but society seems to spit on him more often than not. Making a pact with the devil was obviously not the best idea Leo’s ever had, but Ms. Archer made his motives – and Leo himself – sympathetic. Anne, in turn, is a very different heroine from Zora, the heroine of DEVIL’S KISS. Anne is a gently bred young lady who doesn’t really believe in the devil or demons, and thus seems ill-equipped to handle a high-stakes battle of good versus evil. But Anne rises to the challenge, showing so much courage, love and strength that you can’t help but admire her.

The action in DEMON’S BRIDE is plentiful, and some of the twists and turns that Ms. Archer delivers managed to shock me. There was actually a scene that had me yelling “Noooooo!” at the book. And I definitely finished DEMON’S BRIDE with a number of questions, which isn’t a bad thing, except for the fact that I have to wait for the third HELLRAISERS book to see if my questions will be answered.

As I’ve said above, DEMON’S BRIDE is the second HELLRAISERS book, but for those who haven’t read the delightful DEVIL’S KISS, Ms. Archer provides enough information in DEMON’S BRIDE that readers new to the series can easily follow along, though the small, but significant, parts Whit and Zora play will definitely make you want to read DEVIL’S KISS. That being said, for the best reading experience, the series should be read in order. The influence the devil’s “gifts” has had on the Hellraisers is definitely more marked in DEMON’S BRIDE and thus the danger the men are in is made all the more clear.

I finished DEMON’S BRIDE with mixed emotions, and I won’t spoil the book by revealing why. However, I will say that Leo and Anne are two strong, endearing protagonists that readers will fall for and their romance was incredibly satisfying. Like its predecessor in the HELLRAISERS series, DEMON’S BRIDE is a unique, engaging read. Now, when can I get my hands on SINNER’S HEART?

Officer Dare Barron has wanted Liza McKnight since he was a teenager. Unfortunately, a dark incident in his past involving Liza’s brother Brian has made him keep his distance from Liza. The only time he sees her is when she’s bailing Brian out of trouble. But when Brian’s out of control behavior puts Liza in danger, Dare is right there to protect her. Attraction sparks instantly, but will Dare be able to put the past behind him? Or will his anger toward Brian destroy Dare’s burgeoning relationship with Liza?

The third Barron brother meets his match in the engaging, emotional KARMA. Author Carly Phillips is at her best here, gifting readers with characters they are sure to grow attached to and a love story that will make romance readers sigh with pleasure. As a pair, Dare and Liza are fantastic. The dynamic between them is excellent and the sensuality definitely heats up KARMA. Individually, I loved both protagonists. I absolutely adored Liza. She’s intelligent, hardworking and incredibly friendly, but she’s also incredibly vulnerable. No one has ever stood up for her, or even stood with her, and it just plain broke my heart to see someone so worthy of being loved be alone. While Dare accuses her of enabling Brian’s bad behavior – which is true – the reasoning behind it makes Liza’s actions understandable.

And speaking of Dare…whew! I’ve been waiting for this particular Barron brother to get his book and Ms. Phillips did not disappoint. Dare’s sexy as hell, caring and protective, but he is by no means perfect. Guilt, bitterness and internal scarring because of his past all combine to make Dare lose his temper and make mistakes with Liza. Even though he needed to be smacked upside the head at times, I like that he was flawed – it humanized him.

KARMA is the third full-length book in Ms. Phillips’s SERENDIPITY series, but you don’t have to have read SERENDIPITY or DESTINY to follow along. However, Dare’s siblings and sisters-in-law play major roles in KARMA, so if you haven’t read the first two books, you’ll definitely be salivating for them after finishing KARMA. Having read SERENDIPITY and DESTINY, I was delighted to revisit the Barron family. Dare’s family often pokes their noses into his love life, but the real joy of seeing them was in the updates Ms. Phillips gave on their own lives. I finished KARMA feeling satisfied not only with the book itself but with the SERENDIPITY series as a whole. While all three Barron brothers have found love, I desperately hope that KARMA doesn’t mark the end of the SERENDIPITY series, for the town and the townsfolk Ms. Phillips has created are simply delightful. Whether or not my hopes pan out, I’ll definitely be re-reading this wonderful series again and again and again!

Cherise Newberry and her best friend Candy Carmichael were living the high life in Tampa, thanks to a series of high-risk real estate deals. But when the Florida housing market crashes, Cherise and Candy find themselves flat-broke with creditors proverbially banging at the door. The one spot of hope comes in the form of a phone call from Cherise’s grandfather. He wants her to return to their small hometown in North Carolina to run his newspaper. Cherise doesn’t want to do it. How can she leave Tampa for the hometown she swore she’d never return to, where everyone insists on calling her Cheri? And how can she take a job where she’ll be the boss of J.J. DeCourcy, the man who broke her heart, then married and divorced her sister? Cherise finds that you can’t always get what you want – especially when your account balance is less than zero. But sometimes, as the song says, “you get what you need,” and what Cheri needs might just be J.J. DeCourcy.

Author Susan Donovan’s signature writing style sparkles in the delightful CHERI ON TOP. CHERI ON TOP has life and energy to spare, making it a joyful book to read. At the beginning of the book, Cheri’s life is a series of disasters, some humorous, some not so. Her reticence to return home is understandable, given the life she left behind in North Carolina and the life she once lived in Florida. I felt sorry for Cheri at first, but I loved watching her pick herself up and make the most of what she’s got. I also adored watching Cheri find herself once more. Though I won’t give any spoilers, part of her development as a character comes with having to face J.J. again. J.J. is a hero who’ll have readers wishing he could show up on their doorstep. He isn’t, however, perfect. He’s made mistakes in the past which contributed to the number of reasons Cheri and he were kept apart. Chief of these reasons being Cheri’s sister, Tanyalee, a sibling I wouldn’t wish on anyone. She throws wrenches into Cheri and J.J.’s reunion, but luckily for our protagonists, Cheri and J.J. have undeniable chemistry. Ms. Donovan made it easy for me to root for Cheri and J.J.’s romance and the love story in CHERI ON TOP makes me smile just to think about it.

A supporting cast of characters, including the funniest – if not only – guard squirrel I’ve ever encountered, help make CHERI ON TOP a memorable read. Ms. Donovan became an instant auto-buy author for me a few years ago when I picked up and read HE LOVES LUCY. Cheri and J.J.’s story is a perfect example of why Ms. Donovan continues to stay on my auto-buy list. CHERI ON TOP is filled with warmth, humor and romance, making it a captivating, charming read. I finished CHERI ON TOP a well-satisfied reader, and I can’t wait to read Candy’s story, I WANT CANDY.

The moment she met him, Calleigh Stuart wanted David Shalvington. But despite her advances, David has rebuffed her over and over again. Just when she’s about had it, David finally reveals the reason for his seeming indifference; he’s a Dom. Calleigh isn’t at all familiar with the world of dominance and submission, and what David will ask of her – if she embraces his lifestyle – is anathema to everything she’s ever known. Calleigh isn’t sure that she’s a submissive, but the more she learns about herself and David, the more intrigued she is. Will Calleigh be able to let go of her reservations and give herself over to David and the dark, sensual pleasures he offers?

BOUND HEARTS is one of the best books I’ve read this year! I loved author C.C. Galloway’s first PORTLAND TIDE book, HAIL MARY, but BOUND HEARTS managed to flat-out sweep me off my feet!

David is a sexy-as-hell Dom who’s alternately firm, patient and understanding. He recognizes Calleigh’s reticence to give into her submissive desires and though he’s not what I would call a gentle soul, he is tender with Calleigh. That doesn’t mean he’s perfect. David makes mistakes with Calleigh outside of the bedroom; mistakes that humanize him and serve to make him a realistic hero.

Calleigh, in turn, is definitely on the list of my favorite romance heroines. She’s just as smart, sharp, successful, funny and caring as David – they’re equals in every respect. But Calleigh is new to the world of D/s, and Ms. Galloway, very wisely, doesn’t make Calleigh’s journey of sexual discovery an obstacle-free course. One thing that has always bothered me in BDSM romance is how heroines who had never before considered themselves submissive almost always throw themselves in without reservation or uncertainty. Calleigh isn’t like that. She loves what happens between her and David in bed, but she has moments of confusion as she sorts out who she is and what she likes. She, too, makes mistakes and I absolutely loved that about her because it furthers the sense of realism in BOUND HEARTS. Something else I loved about Calleigh was her flaws. She’s tightly wound, thanks in no small part to her mother, and her problems seem to centralize on her fixation with food and weight. Ms. Galloway deftly handles this plotline and I think it adds to the relatability of Calleigh’s character, as this is a problem many women face.

As a pair, Calleigh and David are fantastic. I’ve already mentioned how they fit one another, but I cannot write about BOUND HEARTS without mentioning the steamy hot sex. Ms. Galloway proved herself to be an excellent author of football romance in HAIL MARY, and in BOUND HEARTS, she proves equal to the task when it comes to D/s romance. Calleigh and David steam up the pages like nobody’s business, so keep a fan handy when reading BOUND HEARTS!

BOUND HEARTS is Ms. Galloway’s second PORTLAND TIDE book, but you don’t have to have read HAIL MARY to enjoy David and Calleigh’s story. However, the beginning of BOUND HEARTS interweaves with parts of HAIL MARY. It was a delight to see some of the events from book one from David and Calleigh’s perspectives. Fans of HAIL MARY will also be delighted to learn that Michael and Mary appear later in the book as well, which is no surprise considering that Mary is Calleigh’s best friend and co-worker and David is the Tide’s general manager.

If I had one complaint about BOUND HEARTS, it would be that I finished it, immediately wanting another PORTLAND TIDE book. I absolutely loved BOUND HEARTS, and I’m hooked on Ms. Galloway’s writing. With its engaging plot, unique characters and sizzling romance, BOUND HEARTS is an absolute winner of a book, and I can’t wait to read more of Ms. Galloway’s work!

18 & Over Book Blogger Follow

18 & Over Book Blogger Follow is a weekly feature that begins on Fridays and runs through the weekend, hosted by Crystal from Reading Between the Wines.

This is a Friday blog hop with the objective to find and visit other book blogs that share the same interest as you, namely books geared towards the 18 & over crowd, and make some new friends!

Question of the Week: Have you read a romance or erotic novel with an M/M or F/F relationship in it? If so, did you enjoy the read? And if you haven't, is that something you would read in the future?

Absolutely! I don't read much F/F, but I'm read a lot of M/M romance. I started with reading M/M/F and graduated from there. In terms of male/male romance, a couple of my favorite authors are Riley Shane, Cameron Dane, Josh Lanyon, and Diana DeRicci. Naming my favorite books...there are just too many. For me, whether it's M/M, M/F, F/F, or any combination thereof, if it's a good story with great characters, I'm gonna love it.

And I cannot wait for Qhuinn and Blay! It's about time. ;)

I adored Carly Phillips's first two Serendipity books (Serendipity and Destiny). I just started book 3, Karma (available May 1st), so I have to flip through for a sexy snippet:

Karma CoverShe wasn't usually bold, but he made it easy, and the next thing Liza knew, she was opening the packet while Dare quickly stripped off. his clothes and rejoined her, sliding beside her on the mattress.

His body head wrapped around her as he brought his mouth down on hers. She moaned and opened for him, amazed at how right it felt to be with him this way. She still held the condom in one hand but used the other to work her way down his body, feeling the differences between his skin and the taut muscles beneath.

Review: Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel

Nora Dearly is not like other girls her age. Instead of being interested in clothing, social calls and raising her station through marriage, Nora is fascinated by military history and politics. With both her parents dead, Nora has no choice but to live under the control of her social-climbing aunt. At least, until zombies attack her home. Nora is saved by masked military men…who aren’t exactly alive themselves. Thrust into a world unlike the one she’s known her whole life, Nora learns of “The Laz” a virus that reanimates the dead. She also happens to fall for Captain Bram Griswold, a handsome, noble soldier who happens to be a zombie himself. As the world tumbles into chaos around them, Nora and Bram must fight for the survival of all they know and love, all the while knowing that the clock is counting down on their doomed romance.

Zombies, star-crossed lovers, action, adventure, romance and more are at play in DEARLY, DEPARTED. With her debut novel, author Lia Habel has delivered a wholly unique story that is sure to entertain fans of paranormal, steampunk, cyber-Victorian and romance alike.

Nora is an intelligent, brave young woman that I adored from the first. She’s not super human and she doesn’t automatically accept the situation she’s been thrown into, but rather asks questions and reacts like a normal person would. Though DEARLY, DEPARTED is told in the first person from five points of view, Nora is the readers’ entrée into the world that Ms. Habel has created. Learning about this inventive world through Nora’s eyes was one of my favorite aspects of DEARLY, DEPARTED.

As for the zombies, I absolutely loved Bram and all the zombies of Company Z. They’re victims of The Laz, but they’ve retained their minds and personalities and, with the help of science, they’re able to function so well you almost wouldn’t know that they were the reanimated dead. Their strength of mind and character in the face of all they’ve been through endeared them to me. I don’t think I could pick a favorite among those of Company Z, but if I had to, it’d be Bram. I can easily see why Nora falls for him. He’s intelligent, honorable and doesn’t kid himself that his time is limited. He’s also brave enough to try and defy the odds by being with Nora, knowing that there is little chance that their star-crossed love could end happily.

I don’t want to talk too much about DEARLY, DEPARTED, for most of the fun of the story comes from not knowing what happens. I’ll end this review by saying that DEARLY, DEPARTED was a wonderful story and I’m looking forward to Ms. Habel’s next GONE WITH THE RESPIRATION book, DEARLY, BELOVED.
